Thanks!! I’m watching an MLB game right now and a catcher took a foul ball that knocked his mask clear off, and that got me wondering on that gear’s origins. That same catcher also was saved grievous damage on a different play because of another piece of essential gear not mentioned in the brief story above: the protective cup. And I’m reminded of a story from perhaps 20 years ago, of a youth league player who was banished from playing a game due to not wearing such a cup. Utterly flabbergasted, the young girl protested that given the obvious anatomical difference between the boys and herself, her need for such a device was minimal at best. But rules were rules. There indeed are now such devices designed for females.
