[…] There are a few iconic things that immediately come to mind when a person thinks about America, such as apple pie, hot dogs…and jeans. Just like Xerox is to photocopy and Kleenex is to tissue, Levi’s is to jeans. While Levi Strauss is the man who funded the invention and the person whose name is synonymous with jeans, Jacob Davis was the actual inventor. In 1870, a woman asked Davis to make her husband a durable pair of work pants. Davis used the denim he purchased from Strauss’ company to fulfill the order for his “waist overalls.” Davis reinforced the button fly and pockets with copper rivets for extra durability. The jeans became very popular and others started to copy Davis’ work so he wanted a patent to protect his idea. Strauss ended up assisting Davis with obtaining his patent in exchange for 50% of the right to sell the riveted clothing. Davis and Strauss received their patent on May 20, 1873. Unfortunately, because his name was on the jeans, Levi Strauss is the name that is remembered, while Davis the inventor is mostly forgotten. (America Comes Alive) […]
