I grew up on the West coast mostly in southern California. We had earthquake drills Duncan cover all the time well into my junior high years. I agree I don't think the duck and cover would do much of good for a nuclear blast never did but I was an obedient child. I am speaking of the fifties and the sixties. Very much enjoyed your article thank you

In reply to <a href="https://americacomesalive.com/remember-duck-cover/#comment-367166">Trish McDermott</a>.

Hi Trish...thanks for posting. I'm quite certain you didn't imagine your childhood.. :) But I can't think how to research this. My guess is that communities braced for the disasters they thought were worth worrying about. There may not have been federal guidelines to stop doing certain drills. All I can say is that hiding under a desk not going to do anybody much good anyway! I remember my teacher assigned students to close the shades before the drill so that we would not hurt by flying glass. Wow... what were they thinking?

I know this is old, but I ended up here because I’m beginning to wonder if I’m a bit crazy. I distinctly remember being shown the nuclear explosion film in 2nd grade. I distinctly remember them teaching us duck and cover at that time. Being from the St. Louis area, I also remember hiding in the hallways for tornado drills and earthquake drills where you hid under the desk. I’m bringing this up because I remember doing 3 different drills. The part where I wonder if I’m crazy is that everything im reading now as an adult say the duck and cover drills for nuclear bombs pretty much only happed in the 50’s and 60’s, but I remember doing them in what would have been ‘77 or ‘78. Was this just a St. Louis thing? Were we the last holdout on these drills? Did I imagine my entire childhood?!?!?
