Thank you so much for sharing your story and your research. You are absolutely right about the danger of munition work, and therefore, that was why they used slaves do it. By sharing your story, you truly make the past come alive.

I hope at some point you'll be able to visit the new monument to the Colored Troops in Wilmington, North Carolina. (It was just dedicated.) They have also done a lot of research on the families in that area. I am sure that the people at the center there would love to know of your research, and of course, would share anything they have with you.

You have done great research. Thank you so much for posting. All best to you.

THERE WAS A CONFEDERATE FACTORY IN MACON, GEORGIA CALLED THE "LABORATORY". DURING MY FAMILY RESEARCH, THRU FOLD3 (MILITARY HISTORY), I PUT THE NAME STRIPLING IN THE SEARCH AREA. TWO FAMILIAR NAMES CAME UP: JORDAN STRIPLING AND DAVID STRIPLING. I WAS
EXCITED TO SEE THE NAME JORDAN STRIPLING, 1863. THIS IS MY GREAT GRANDFATHER FROM HOUSTON COUNTY, GEORGIA (PERRY). PERRY IS ABOUT 30 MILES SOUTH OF PERRY. GREAT GRANDPA WAS BORN 1840 IN PERRY, GA.

AT FIRST I THOUGHT THIS WAS A HOSPITAL, BUT COME TO FIND OUT IT WAS A MUNITIONS FACTORY, MAKING MUNITIONS FOR THE CONFEDERATE ARMY. GREAT GRANDPA WAS A REFERRED TO AS "ENSLAVED LABOR". HE WAS FROM THE ROBERT STRIPLING PLANTATION IN HOUSTON COUNTY, GEORGIA. SLAVED WERE HIRED OUT BY THEIR OWNER, AT A RATE OF $20.00 A MONTH, TO HELP MAKE MUNITIONS. A W. H. STRIPLING WAS THE AGENT FOR THE STRIPLING ENSLAVERS. I HAD ALWAYS WONDERED HOW GREAT GRANDPA GOT HIS FIRST NAME. THE MAIDEN NAME OF ROBERT STRIPLING'S WIFE WAS JORDAN, GREAT GRANDPA HAD TAKEN THE MAIDEN NAME OF ROBERT'S WIFE FOR HIS FIRST NAME. THERE WERE 3 MEN IN MY FAMILY WITH THE NAME DAVID. I DON'T KNOW HOW THEY WERE RELATED.

I LOST GREAT GRANDPA AND FAMILY WITH THE 1880 CENSUS, IN HOUSTON COUNTY, GEORGIA. I DID FIND HIM ON A 1892 TAX RECORD FOR HOUSTON COUNTY, GA. HE WAS MARRIED TO SARAH STUBBS.

THE "LABORATORY" WAS LOCATED ON HIGHWAY 41 (VINEVILLE AV.). I LIVED IN MACON, GA. FOR ABOUT 3 YEARS WHILE WORKING FOR THE RAILROAD. I USED THIS HIGHWAY MANY A TIMES WHEN I LIVED IN MACON. THERE IS A MARKER ERECTED AT THE AREA, GIVING THE HISTORY OF THE "LABORATORY". I STOPPED BY A FEW WEEKS AGO AND TOOK A PICTURE OF THE MARKER

MAKING MUNITIONS WAS DANGERIOUS WORK, SO SLAVES WERE USED. NOTE: 1944, THE DESCENDANTS OF THESE SAME SLAVED WERE BEING USED TO LOAD MUNTIONS ON A SHIP IN PORT CHICAGO, CA., FOR WWII. THE SHIP EXPLODED, ABOUT 450 PEOPLE WERE KILLED, MOSTLY BLACK. IT WAS DANGERIOUS WORK.
