I believe he must have been! I found mention on facebook that his son, Michael, now a middle-aged man, was a silversmith and jewelry maker, and then–as you must have done–I found a bracelet or two by Chester Nez. It all makes sense. Thank you for adding that detail!

There was a Navajo artist by the same name and I was wondering if it was the same person as the code talker. There silversmith mark is C/J Nez .

That’s a really interesting question! In looking around at other articles about him as well as his work for VA in Albuquerque, I would guess that they don’t exist. However, I did find an Albuquerque mural painter named Nathaniel Nez. My guess is that a son inherited the talent and ability, too!
