Thank you for your wonderful post. I agree. Igloo's story is truly something special. He was a brave, sassy terrier who thrived in the Antarctic climate! The fact that Walden documented his life by talking to men who knew him made the story additionally amazing.

I don't know what made me think of Jane Brevoort Walden, but I googled her tonight and found this page about beloved Igloo. Now I'm in tears. I read Jane Brevoort Walden's book when I was 10--1961--and a short-haired fox terrier was still part of our family. I devoured dog books, and I loved this one so much that I took it out of my grade school's library as much as possible just to have it until I discovered a local antiquarian book dealer who found a copy for me. Didn't realize then that Diana Thorne did the fabulous ink drawings. When I was in high school, my grade school's library was severely damaged by a fire set by vandals. I was happy to present copies of my two favorite books, including "Igloo," to the sweet librarian who'd let me monopolize those books years earlier. I hope kids still read "Igloo" nearly a century after the book came out. This dog story is not only timeless but true.

I so agree....and Igloo was fearless and a total character. He's very lucky the men stepped in to rescue him when the sled dogs got hold of him.

I have a terrier with Igloo's personality. He's always getting into things that are way above what a terrier should be doing!

Thank you! And I have to confess that Igloo is one of my favorite stories! I was lucky a book was written about the dog within 5 years of his death.

Thanks for posting.

[…] A terrier named Igloo traveled to both the North and South Poles in the 1920s as a companion to his human, explorer Admiral Richard Bird. He chased penguins, picked fights with the sled dogs, and had a camel-hair suit made for him to keep him warm. His headstone is shaped like an iceberg..
